SACHA at Mohawk Human Services Orientation

Standard

Welcome back to school! (For folks who are attending school…)

Today SACHA was excited to be invited to talk about TBTN at the orientation for folks who are just starting the Human Services program at Mohawk.

There were over seven hundred folks in the auditorium.  Here’s some blurry photos that I took:

Trust me.  They were very cool folks who were excited to hear what Hamilton is working on to end violence against women…

Whenever I visit colleges, universities or high schools, I can’t help but remember the following statistics:

  • 8 out of 10 female students said they had been sexually harassed at school. (“The Joke’s Over – Student to Student Sexual Harassment in Secondary Schools”, published by The Ontario Women’s Directorate, The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation and the Ministry of Education, (1995).)
  • Four out of five female undergraduates surveyed at Canadian universities said they had been victims of violence in a dating relationship.
  • Four out of five female undergraduates surveyed at Canadian universities said they had been victims of violence in a dating relationship.
  • 60% of Canadian college-aged males indicated they would commit sexual assault if they were certain they would not get caught. (Lenskyj, 1992.)

I hope that everyone has a safe school year.
